The State of Connecticut is taking a major step forward in helping to reduce the growing threat of Internet crime.
Earlier this month, Attorney General George Jepsen announced plans to open a Privacy and Data Security Department lead by Assistant Attorney General Matthew Fitzsimmons. He will be assisted by a team of attorneys, as well as a panel of experts spanning multiple industries, including healthcare and finance. The department will also retain the services of an unspecified technical contractor.
The decision follows Jepsen’s 2011 appointment of a special task force charged with creating public awareness about data security and online threats for businesses and consumers in Connecticut. According to Government Technology magazine, Jepsen’s task force has carried out several high-profile investigations since its appointment, including those at aimed at Target, Anthem and Home Depot.
Moving forward, the new department will continue to carry out investigations related to data security issues and consumer privacy. Additionally, the department will assist in notifying the public in the event of a data breach.
While it’s great to see the state taking decisive action against cybercrime, it’s important to remember that the new department will not be able to accomplish the job of reducing cybercrime on its own. Every business owner should be doing his or her part to ensure that sensitive customer information is being stored and transmitted on secure data center equipment.
