Three Cybersecurity Predictions To Heed In 2016

2015 was a wild year for cybersecurity, as corporate hacks continued to multiply. Now, profitability from data theft is at an all-time high, with cyberthieves seeing returns of up to 1,425 percent on their investments of hacking and ransomeware kits. The average cost of a data breach is now hovering around an unmanageable $6.5 million.

That’s a low figure, too, when considering an example like Target which had to pay $200 million following its 2013 breach.

Suffice to say, the majority of business leaders are scratching their heads and wondering what exactly 2016 will have in store. Will there be more hacks, stolen customer data and ruined brand reputations? The answer, unfortunately, is yes across the board.

It’s therefore critical to look ahead and be aware of what’s coming down the pike, so that you can keep your organization safe. To that end, here are three cybersecurity predictions to heed in 2016, from Dr. Hugh Thompson, CTO and SVP at enterprise security leader Blue Coat:

More cloud hacks: Over the past few years, businesses have begun to rely on cloud services to streamline data management and delivery processes. According to Dr. Thompson, however, in 2016 we will see more breaches of private cloud services as hackers will look to exploit them. Social engineering attacks, he explains, will continue to focus on mimicking cloud login screens to steal end user credentials.

Businesses will increase their defenses: In light of all of the recent attacks against big-name corporations, more business leaders are taking an active role in bolstering their defense capabilities. Look for more companies prioritizing their response and analysis capabilities, and investing in breach insurance to mitigate financial risks.

MSPs will come to the rescue: Not surprisingly, many businesses in 2016 will find themselves  unable to effectively stay on top of cyberthreats. Therefore, a large portion will outsource their cybersecurity needs to managed professionals instead of keeping operations in-house.
