Government Issues Another Crucial Ransomware Warning

The National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center or NCCIC has observed an increase in ransomware attacks across the world. The FBI issued a virtually identical warning last May.

Sadly, it seems many companies and even state governments are not listening.

They explain Ransomware is a type of malicious software, or malware, designed to deny access to a computer system or data until a ransom is paid. Ransomware typically spreads through phishing emails or by unknowingly visiting an infected website.

They continue by explaining Ransomware can be devastating to an individual or an organization. Anyone with important data stored on their computer or network is at risk, including government or?law enforcement agencies and healthcare systems?or other critical infrastructure entities. Throughout different ransomware events, NCCIC's best practices and guidance remain the same:

  1. create system back-ups

  2. be wary of opening emails and attachments from unknown or unverified senders

  3. ensure that systems are updated with the latest patches

NCCIC encourages users and administrators to review its Ransomware page and the U.S. Government Interagency Joint Guidance for further information.

Ransomware recently brought the city of Atlanta to its knees as we recently reported. The computer systems have been down for weeks causing many millions of dollars of damage.

Small businesses are particularly at risk. Many companies are put out of business as a result of a cyberattack. Hoping you are protected is not enough. To have a cybersecure company you need an internal IT policy review, penetration test, anomaly detection and team cybersecurity training. Apex Technology Services has an inexpensive way to get access to all these things via low monthly payments via Cyber360.Work. Often, companies need to start with training and for these organizations there is CyberTrain.Work
