With the need to create more advanced business applications, many of which are cloud-based, enterprises are increasingly turning to managed IT support. In fact, the typical enterprise will run almost 70 percent of its infrastructure in the cloud or other locations outside its own data center by 2018, according to a recent report from Savvis.
Currently, the ratio for such services is 65 percent in-house and 35 percent outsourced, which is expected to significantly alter over the next four years, shifting from 31 percent in-house and 69 percent outsourced.
"Cloud is part of the picture—but not the only part," stated the study. "Rather, organizations are moving to a complex mix of IT infrastructure models that include, but are not limited to, cloud."
The survey—which asked 550 IT decision makers in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore about the future of their IT infrastructure—also found that there has been a notable increase in the use of cloud services, which should come as no surprise as cloud computing delivers cost-effectiveness, flexibility, increased collaboration, security and disaster recovery.
So why are so many enterprises opting for managed IT support? According to the survey results, 42 percent of respondents cited cost containment or cost reduction as their reason for outsourcing. Moreover, 36 percent of survey respondents stated that they garner better service quality with outsourced cloud services as opposed to in-house, while 35 percent said increased flexibility and scalability were two advantages to outsourced environments.
