In the Wake of Snowden, Many Decision Makers Believe Their Data Might Not Be Safe

Following former contractor Edward Snowden's announcement last year that the National Security Agency (NSA) was engaging in cyber-surveillance on a widespread scale, nearly nine out of 10 IT leaders said they feared that someone had accessed their data without proper authorization, according to a new study.

The study, which surveyed 1,000 IT decision makers in France, Germany, Hong Kong, the United States and the United Kingdom, concluded that many IT managers are uninterested in partnering with U.S.-based cloud providers, ostensibly due to Snowden's revelations.

Other findings from the research include the fact that:

  • One-sixth of companies are delaying or cancelling cloud migration projects
  • 31 percent of companies are moving data to trusted locations
  • 83 percent of respondents indicated that Snowden's revelations prevented them from migrating their IT infrastructure to the cloud

When it comes to businesses in virtually any vertical, the protection of data is integral to long-term economic vitality. These days, companies are increasingly leveraging cloud-based solutions to realize the myriad of benefits—like cost savings, increased functionality, access and agility—that come with such a migration. That means that companies that are hesitant to adopt such solutions—in this case, because of a fear of someone granting unauthorized access to their data—are at a significant disadvantage compared to their competitors.

Luckily, there's an easy solution to all this: Business owners who are intent on migrating to the cloud but don't want to deal with potentially compromised data should consider enlisting the services of a managed service provider. Such companies oversee the IT needs of any business, ensuring that data and resources that are stored and delivered through the cloud are kept as safe as possible. That means you don't have to worry about safeguarding your data—a team of professionals takes care of that for you.
