Over Labor Day weekend, the private accounts of a variety of celebrities—including actress Jennifer Lawrence and model Kate Upton—were infiltrated by hackers. Many private photos—some of them bearing nude images of the celebrities—were stolen and posted online.
Days later, nobody really knows how the breach occurred. Initially, there was some speculation as to whether Apple’s iCloud service was compromised. But the company has denied that the attack stemmed from a widespread assault on Apple’s systems.
A spokesperson for Apple, Nat Kerris, said, “After more than 40 hours of investigation, we have discovered that certain celebrity accounts were compromised by a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions, a practice that has become all too common on the Internet.” She added that “none of the cases ... has resulted from any breach in any of Apple’s systems including iCloud or Find My iPhone.”
It will be interesting to see how this case wraps up. But there’s a clear lesson here: When it comes to ensuring your digital security—particularly in today’s driven-by-the-cloud world—you can never be too cautious.
What would hackers try to steal from your business? And could they get at it successfully?
Whatever your answers may be, two things are certain: Your company has at least one thing of value that is stored digitally, and you have to do all that is within your power to make sure that no one can access that data without proper authorization.
The good news is that you don’t have to be a computer whiz to figure out how to strengthen the protection of your data. We can take it from here.
