73% Are Worried about Cybercrime or a Victim

LinuxInsider ran a survery on its site which shows how concerned people are about the threat of cyberscurity. A full 73% are worried or have been hit by hackers. Even worse and unfortunately somewhat accurate, under 8% of respondants think the tech market is doing a good job protecting people.

There are a few notable details about this online-poll worth noting. It isn't scientific as a person could theoretically answer the poll more than once and/or send it to friends and colleagues to sway results. In addition, the audience is highly techical as it is Linux users who are generally the most technical among us. This is why the <8% number is even scarier - this is techies assesing techies.

Other recent news worth sharing - our company, Apex Technology Services was just written up in the local paper - The Norwalk Hour... Thanks to Alex Soule for writing a great piece. In addition, we have done our best in recent days to keep you posted on things you can do to protect yourself. We've actually done even more... We wanted to warn you about the magnatude of the problem first and then present ideas to you which can help.

We discussed Microsoft's idea of a Digital Geneva Convention that scares us to death as it shows how unprepared we are to fight the threats we face. We then reminded you of how high the cost can be if you get hit... Yahoo will pay a minimum of $250 million but likely much more as a result of their breach. Smaller companies can easily be put out of business if similar things happen to them.

From there we've suggested ideas to protect yourself. For example, 5 habits that could cause a breach and 10 reasons your company will get hit by a cyberattack. We receive calls on a regular basis from companies in Manhattan and the rest of the tristate area who have been hit by cryptolocker and other ransomware. Many are not prepared and are put in a terrible position as a result. Regardless of the size of your company, everyone is a target... Be sure to plan for the breach beforehand because it will eventually happen.

A new breed of hacktrepeneurs has awoken and they have little to fear and everything to gain by infecting as many companies as possible and extorting money from them.
