Five months ago, Target, one of the country’s largest retailers, announced that the sensitive data belonging to up to 110 million of its customers had been compromised. Today, the company’s CEO is out of a job.
On May 5, the mega-retailer announced that CEO Gregg Steinhafel, who’s worked at Target for 35 years and had led the company since 2008, was stepping down effective immediately.
Target has struggled to recover from the theft of its customers’ debit and credit card information. According to the New York Times, the company has seen reduced sales and fewer profits, as well as a weaker stock price, since the breach was announced.
If a company as big as Target can suffer considerably following a data breach, it seems unlikely that a small- to medium-sized business could remain immune to a similar disaster.
Luckily business owners no longer need to roll the dice and hope that their data is secure. By teaming with a managed service provider that can safeguard your company’s technological infrastructure, you eliminate possible access by unauthorized individuals.
