There's No Excuse for Alert Fatigue in Cybersecurity

As you’re watching Olympic basketball this week, pay attention to how other countries stack up against the dominant U.S. men’s and women’s teams. Most international squads are only able to hold steady against the powerful U.S. opposition for the first few minutes or so of a game. Then, time and again, they falter, ultimately succumbing to the intense U.S. onslaught.

What does Olympic basketball have to do with network security? Trying to protect your network from cybercrime (meaning hackers and malware) is like attempting to block shots from the U.S. Olympic basketball team: the threats you are up against are relentless. Network attacks are highly sophisticated, and capable of detecting and exploiting any and all vulnerabilities in your system. They originate from a variety of sources, ranging from foreign government-sponsored hacking groups to organized criminal and terrorist organizations to rogue individuals looking to profit from private data.

You can try all you like to keep hackers out of your network. But sooner or later, you’re going to fail. We’re willing to bet that your organization lacks the resources—meaning the manpower and the advanced threat detection technologies—necessary for effectively combating cybercrime.

The only way you stand a fighting chance in the 24/7/365 game of cyberdefense is to engage in “active response,” which—as TechCrunch recently pointed out—was one of the most talked-about terms at this year’s Black Hat event in Las Vegas. Active response, if you’re new to the phrase, refers to the ability to respond to attacks the moment they are detected.

An active response strategy protects a business against a threat called alert fatigue, which happens when there are more cybersecurity alerts than there are available resources to respond to them. By engaging in active response (like modifying a firewall in near real time to reject incoming requests from known cybercriminals), a business can prevent bad actors from worming their way into a network. Most data breaches occur only after threats are allowed to persist over long periods of time. That is, the more information that hackers are able to gather about a network, the easier it becomes to launch an effective attack.

As TechCrunch pointed out, active response can be either fully automated or it can be backed up with human intervention.
