Safety.com analyzed data from the 2019 FBI Internet Crime Report to find out which states are most affected by cybercrime and the findings are pretty scary.

We wanted to see which coast was most affected by crime and we were not surprised to see California is the hands-down winner in terms of the most cyber crime by state. But then again, the home of Disney Land and Hollywood is massive. It is 500 miles from San Francisco to San Diego for example. In our home state of Connecticut, almost everything is within 100 miles.

Still, California losses were over $574 million dollars! Washington State was $71 million and Oregon was $37 million.

On the east coast, Florida losses were $293 million, New York losses were $198 million, New Jersey at $106 million, Pennsylvania at $94 million, Virginia at $92 million, Massachusetts at $84 million, Maryland at $53 million, North Carolina at $48 million, Connecticut at $34 million, South Carolina at $20 million Washington DC at $12 million, Rhode Island at $10 million and Delaware at $6 Million.

The East coast total is around $1.1 billion while the west coast around $682 million. Then again, the East coast was represented by 13 states and the west by just three.

What do we learn from this? Cybercrime is dangerous and no matter where you go the numbers are heading up. In addition, companies are being targeted increasingly by nation-states as well as criminal hacker gangs, often untouchable by U.S. law enforcement.

Protecting yourself is getting tougher but must be done to keep your business or government agency, school, state, city, etc. running.
