Three Dangerous Cybersecurity Misconceptions

The cybersecurity landscape has changed dramatically over the last few years. While cybercrime used to be a problem for data center managers alone, now it’s an issue that all areas of the enterprise have to contend with. So as an executive, you need to do your part to stay well informed if you want to help keep your business safe from criminals.

Unfortunately, though, it’s not always easy to separate fact from fiction when it comes to cybersecurity — especially for those who are new to the topic.

Here are three popular misconceptions that business leaders have about cybersecurity:

1. Your business is off the radar: Many executives falsely believe that they are safe from cybercrime. Some believe that they are safe because they have not yet been targeted (even though they most likely already have!) Others think their business is too small to be attacked. This is entirely wrong. Cybercriminals target businesses of all sizes, and across all industries. In fact, they are more likely to launch campaigns against unsuspecting business that appear to be vulnerable; for instance, think of an SMB that does not use strong password protection. If your business is online, processing transactions and storing data, it’s a target. And sooner or later, you will get attacked.

2. There is no real way to protect your business: Another huge misconception among business leaders is that cybercrime has become too sophisticated to even try and fight. In other words, why invest in basic cybersecurity solutions when advanced hackers can just bypass them and enter at will? As we explained in a recent blog post, you don’t need to go overboard protecting your business. You just need to have a stronger network than the business next to you. The harder you make it for hackers to break into your network, the more likely they will be to move on to an easier target.  If you monitor your network, patch your system regularly and train your employees to be safe online, you will increase your chances of avoiding a costly attack.

3. It’s too hard to find help: It’s true, the U.S. is struggling with a massive cybersecurity shortage. Many businesses are finding that it’s very difficult to find cybersecurity professionals that have enough experience and qualifications to be effective (or to justify their high salaries). But if you are in this position, don't give up. Just change your strategy. Instead of looking for a full time cybersecurity expert, consider outsourcing network security operations to a managed services provider (MSP) like Apex Technology Services. An MSP can provide the guidance you are looking for, at an affordable price. You’ll also benefit from around-the-clock monitoring, with advanced technologies for threat detection and elimination.
