Be On Full Alert For Intellectual Property Theft

You and your team members couldn’t be more confident about the year ahead. Yesterday morning, you had a closed-door meeting to discuss your grand strategy to take over your industry. And you spent the rest of the day excitedly exchanging plans and ideas.

Of course, your ideas are top secret right now. Nobody outside of your close circle of colleagues is even aware of what you have in store yet…right?

Unfortunately, this may not be the case. Someone could be silently stealing your information and using it for their personal gain.

Intellectual property theft is a major problem today, as cyberthieves are just as interested in stealing assets like plans, drawings and trade secrets as they are in acquiring sensitive data. In fact, in a recent study, 12 percent of global business and IT professionals claimed they suffered an IP security theft incident within the last year. And 33 percent claimed they weren’t aware if an incident occurred.

Now here’s the really sobering part:

These thieves could be working in your own company. They could be the same people that you were brainstorming ideas with just hours ago! In fact, 20 percent of people surveyed think that employees or other insiders represent the most likely source for an attack.

Of course, intellectual property theft could just as easily come from your competitors. In the study, respondents claimed that the automotive, oil and gas and real estate industries were most at risk for intellectual property theft.

So, what can you do to prevent this from occurring?

Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do to protect the data that lives offline. The most you can do is be very careful about who you trust with private information, and have faith that they will have your best interests in mind.

You can, however, take active measures to protect the digital assets that live on your company’s network. Contact Apex Technology Services to learn more about what you need to do to keep your business safe!
